About CAPM&R

MISSION

The CAPM&R represents and promotes the interests of the specialty of physiatry in Canada by providing and maintaining a national forum and network.

It advances and increases awareness of the specialty through strategic alliances and partnerships, public policy and, most importantly, professional and practice development.

VISION

The CAPM&R shall represent all physiatrists and physiatrists in training and promote excellence in their roles as medical expert, communicator, collaborator, manager, health advocate, scholar and professional.

STRATEGIC DIRECTIONS

The Association shall

  • Expand opportunities for education, scientific collaboration and practice development.

  • Promote and provide leadership for continuing professional development in physiatry.

  • Create strategic alliances and partnerships to enhance both the practice of physiatry and the process of rehabilitation.

  • Increase awareness of the roles and contributions of physiatry.

  • Identify and respond to issues that affect the practice of physiatry and the people we serve.

  • Facilitate networking and social interaction among physiatrists.

  • Be fiscally responsible to enable further growth and development.

OBJECTIVES

Its objectives are

  • to advance the practice of physical medicine and rehabilitation

  • to promote related research

  • to further the teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate students in the field

  • to represent its members in their relationship with governments and medical associations

  • to support other organizations whose purpose is to create a forum for the exchange of views among the representatives of the various groups, professional and lay, who are concerned with physical medicine and rehabilitation and

  • to provide a forum for communication and dissemination of specialty information through the association's newsletter.

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

It is the Purpose of the Canadian Association of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (CAPM&R) to provide and maintain a national professional forum and network, for the exchange of information and opinion, which shall contribute to advancing both the specialty of physical medicine and rehabilitation and the provision of rehabilitation within the health care of Canadians.

To achieve this purpose, the Association shall:

  • Maintain categories of membership which effectively represent the breadth of clinical practice, education and research in physical medicine and rehabilitation, through trainees and certified specialists in that field, associated basic scientists and representatives of other related medical and surgical specialties.

  • Support improvements in the quality of physical medicine clinical practice and the provision of adequate compensation for services rendered.

  • Provide members with opportunities for professional development.

  • Hold annual meetings which permit scientific, business, collegial and social interaction.

  • Promote high standards for undergraduate and postgraduate education in the specialty.

  • Encourage clinical and basic science research relevant to physical medicine and rehabilitation.

  • Maintain liaison with organizations who promote exchanges of views and information between professional and lay groups concerned with rehabilitation.

  • Use monies received from membership fees or from other sources to further the purpose of the Association.

CME/CPD MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of the CAPM&R Continuing Professional Development (CPD) program is to promote excellence in the professional practice of physiatrists. The CPD program supports the life-long learning needs of physiatrists and physiatrists in training.

  • Through a continuous iterative process, the goals are:

  • To assess the professional development needs of the target audience.

  • To provide educational activities consistent with educational needs

  • To foster learning through various educational methods

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of the educational activities and their effects on the knowledge, skills and attitudes of participants

Through these goals, the CAPM&R CPD program strives to enhance the knowledge, skills and attitudes of physicians in order to continue to improve health care in Canada.
